Legalization of Sports Betting

In recent years, the legalization of sports betting has expanded across many states in the U.S., following the 2018 Supreme Court ruling that allowed states to legalize it individually. This has significantly increased the popularity of sports betting in the U.S. and other countries that are exploring regulation. Legalization has opened up new markets for sports betting, both in person at casinos and online platforms. This has led to a surge in both traditional and mobile betting, allowing fans to place bets easily and quickly.

According to the AGA Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker, "Kentucky saw $2.66 billion in handle, generating $321.1 million in sports betting revenue and $43.9 million in state sports betting taxes."(AGA, 2024) This shows how much sports betting has grown in recent years. As more states make sports betting legal, the amount of money people are betting and the revenue generated are increasing quickly. With sports betting becoming more popular, states are also seeing big boosts in tax income, like Kentucky's $43.9 million in taxes. As the industry keeps growing, it’s clear that sports betting is becoming a major part of the gaming world and helping state economies.

According to the AGA Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker, "Third quarter sports wagering revenue grew 42.4 percent to $3.24 billion, a new third-quarter record for the vertical."(AGA, 2024) This shows the huge growth in sports betting, with a record amount of money being wagered in just one quarter. The 42.4 percent increase highlights how quickly the industry is expanding as more people get involved in sports betting. This growth is not just good for operators but also shows how popular sports betting has become in the U.S., setting new records and continuing to rise as more states legalize it.

The gross gaming revenue for sports betting in the U.S. The AGA Commerical Gaming Revenue Tracker has stated that the gross gaming revenue for sports betting in the U.S. is at $108.56 billion. This milestone highlights the rapid growth of the sports betting industry, driven by the increasing number of states legalizing and regulating sports wagering. As more people participate in placing bets on sporting events, both online and in-person, the industry's revenue continues to soar. This growth brings significant economic benefits, generating substantial tax revenue for states and creating jobs in the gaming sector. However, with the rise in popularity of sports betting, there are concerns about the potential for addiction. As more people engage in gambling, it’s important to recognize the risks and ensure responsible betting practices are in place to help prevent harmful habits. With more states likely to legalize sports betting in the future, the industry’s growth will need to balance both its economic impact and the need for responsible gambling initiatives.

Gambling Addiction

Certain types of gambling are designed in a way that can create an illusion of control, where players mistakenly believe they can influence the outcome. This feeling is often stronger in games where decisions seem to impact the result, like poker or sports betting. Greo Evidence Insights states "Structural characteristics of certain gambling types can increase the illusion of control. That is, people mistakenly believe that they can control the outcome of the game. Illusion of control can cause people to continue gambling despite their losses"(Greo, 2024). Early wins can also reinforce this illusion, making players think they have control over their success. As a result, they may continue gambling even after losing, convinced they can change their luck. This false belief can lead to risky gambling behavior and contribute to addiction, as players may feel compelled to keep playing in hopes of regaining their winnings.

Gambling addiction is a serious issue that affects many individuals, and recent trends show a troubling rise in sports betting-related problems. In fact, Ohio's Problem Gambling Network Michael Buzzelli says, "sports betting was the top form of problematic gambling reported to the helpline, surpassing lottery and casino slot machines" (Mogg & Bendix, 2024). This surge can be linked to the increasing popularity and accessibility of sports betting, especially with online platforms making it easier than ever to place bets. The thrill of the game, combined with the illusion of control that bettors may feel when using their knowledge of sports, can lead to a dangerous cycle of continuous gambling. Even after experiencing losses, the belief that they can win back money often drives people to gamble more, escalating the risk of addiction. This highlights the need for greater awareness and support systems to address the growing problem of gambling addiction, particularly in the context of sports betting.

Younger Generation

A study done by Gambling Commission targeted towards the age group of 11-17 years olds resulted in multiple discoveries of reasons why an individual may place a bet. These discoveries talk about the feelings a person has placing a bet as well as triggers that may increase the chance a bet is placed.

According to the study, "80% of individuals who have spent their own money gambling in the past 12 months, did so because they regard it as a fun thing to do"( Gambling Commission, 2024). This proves that the younger generation believe that gambling has a thrill to itself. This thrill can lead into repetitive number of placed bets, spiraling into addiction.

The study also asked the volunteers if they had grown up with or seen a family member gamble. Over one quarter of the results claimed that the younger generation has experienced seeing a family member gambling while growing up. This proves that the act of seeing others gamble can increase the factor of yourself gambling.
